چکیده

Traditional economic decision theory proposes that people behave in certain ways when faced with a well-formulated set of alternatives and information. It is a normative theory; it suggests that people should act according to certain decision rules, but not that they will necessarily do so in reality. The standard assumption is that a person has a utility function over all possible outcomes, which defines the desirability or usefulness of any given scenario. Traditional utility theory asserts that in a decision without uncertainty, a person should choose the alternative resulting in the highest level of utility, and that in a decision with uncertainty, a person should choose the alternative with the highest expected utility. Detailed explanations are given by von Neumann and Morgenstern and Savage [1,2]. These ideas are generally sound and can be valuable when used as a guide for decision makers. However, it was initially thought that they were also valuable as a descriptive theory. It has since been determined that people violate normative decision theory in many clear and predictable ways. In this article, we introduce and discuss several of these interesting behavioral phenomena. One of the earliest researchers to demonstrate a deviation from expected utility theory was Allais [3]. He distributed two surveys. In the first survey, respondents were asked to choose between the following

Game Theory without Decision-Theoretic Paradoxes

Most work in game theory is conducted under the assumption that the players are expected utility maximizers. Expected utility is a very tractable decision model, but is prone to wellknown paradoxes and empirical violations (Allais 1953, Ellsberg 1961), which may induce biases in game-theoretic predictions. La Mura (2009) introduced a projective generalization of expected utility (PEU) which avo...

Allais Paradoxes Can be Reversed by Presenting Choices in Canonical Split Form

This paper tests Birnbaum’s (2004) theory that the constant consequence paradoxes of Allais are due to violations of coalescing, the assumption that when two branches lead to the same consequence, they can be combined by adding their probabilities. Rank dependent utility and cumulative prospect theory imply that the Allais paradoxes are due to violations of restricted branch independence, a wea...

issues in Utility Measurement

Descriptive theories of decision making are constrained by the need to explain the following behavioral phenomena: risk aversion, gambling, purchases of insurance, investment, the paradoxes of Allais and Ellsberg, intransitivity of preference, irregularities of choice, preference reversals, risk judgments, violations of branch independence, the difference between buying and selling prices, viol...

Tests of rank-dependent utility and cumulative prospect theory in gambles represented by natural frequencies: Effects of format, event framing, and branch splitting

Four studies with 3440 participants investigated four new paradoxes that refute rank-dependent utility and cumulative prospect theories of risky decision making. All four paradoxes can be interpreted as violations of coalescing, the assumption that branches leading to the same consequence can be combined by adding their probabilities. These studies explored if there is some format in which coal...
